Fructose and Fruit Juice

picking orangesIt used to be that having a glass of orange juice with your breakfast meal was a healthy start to the day. Get your vitamin C! These days, as more and more studies are coming out about the harmful effects of excess fructose on our health, it may be wiser to just eat an orange.

It’s pretty well known the destructive effects of sodas on health. What’s not so obvious to many people is how fruit juice can sabotage one’s weight and health goals as well. Studies have shown that consumption of excess fructose (compared to other sugars) contributes to a fatty liver, increases risk for gout in adults, and increases harmful belly fat associated with heart disease and diabetes.  This is because fructose is metabolized differently by the body than other sugars.
