Power of Essential Oils

I sit with a book before me, detailing recipes, tinctures, and the medicinal properties of botanicals and essential oils. It’s like a book of secrets – except the wisdom found in the plants around us really isn’t a secret, just not well known or well practiced for many. It’s a lost art — and one that fascinates me.

I have been using essential oils for years, and in addition to my mindfulness practice, eating well, and exercising, they are one of my top resources for wellness and beauty.

What are essential oils?

Simply put, essential oils are the distilled life blood of a plant. The leaves, flowers, roots, stems, bark, needles, leaves, and/or resin…whatever part of the plant carries medicinal properties is the part distilled to extract the oil.

As Christi states in her book, Vibrational Raindrop Technique, “Essential oils perform many functions in plants as well as in people.  They assist metabolism, act as types of hormones and ligands, fight off infections by viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi, and always work towards maintaining balance, or homeostasis, within the plant or person.”

How do essential oils work?

Without getting too technical, essential oils are composed of hundreds of very tiny compounds, which give the molecules their aromatic effect: they diffuse in the air and stimulate our sense of smell through Cranial Nerve 1.

Most essential oils also contain sesquiterpenes, which allow them to pass through our blood brain barrier. This barrier protects our brains from exposure to toxins. Sesquiterpenes carry oxygen into the cells all over the body, including the brain. This affects the pituitary and pineal glands – major players in our hormone regulation, and the amygdala – where we store emotional trauma.

Essential oils can be diffused, inhaled, applied topically, or taken internally to uplift and balance emotional states, enhance physical wellness, refine skin, deepen spiritual awareness, and purify body and home.

How to Choose Safe & Effective Essential Oils

For essential oils that are safe and effective to use, choose 100% pure therapeutic grade oils!  Most other “essential oils” simply have an aromatic effect with no other benefits and can actually be harmful if used internally or topically.

distillationIn order to extract an oil that retains its medicinal properties, it must be distilled by therapeutic grade standards.  The distillation process should be done slowly, at low pressure, and at a relatively low temperature — steam distilled or cold pressed. The AFNOR (Association French Normalization Organization Regulation) and ISO (International Standards Organization) provide these parameters and standards of the chemical profile of the primary constituents of essential oils.

Wherever and from whomever you purchase essential oils, please, please, please be careful of which essential oil products you do purchase, as many are made with fillers and synthetic ingredients, which in turn can cause more trouble than good and won’t give you the results you are looking for.  When purchasing essential oils to use on your body or to take internally, always make sure they are therapeutic grade.

What brand of oils do I use and recommend?

Young Living Essential Oils are 100% pure therapeutic-grade essential oils. Young Living carefully monitors every step of the production of the oils from beginning to end through a unique seed to seal process, ensuring the purity of each essential oil and protecting nature’s living energy in every oil. There are no chemicals, fillers, GMOs or synthetic products used in the making of these oils.  They even use their own oils as bug repellent on their crops instead of chemical pesticides — now that’s commitment to holistic wellness!  What this translates to is that these oils actually are safe and effective for therapeutic use – whether inhaled, ingested, or applied topically.

I use Young Living oils, not only because they are rated as one of the top quality producers of essential oils, but because they have a passion for educating and sharing, not just selling.  Plus, I love that they are involved in every step of the process from growing the seed to sealing the bottle, so I can trust the product.  And, I’ve seen results – from people recovering from surgeries faster to the calming of upset animals and children.
